An analysis of the lipids of the bacterium Serratia sex shop arles marcescens has shown that palmitic acid and 9,10-methylenehexadecanoic acid constitute about 75% of the total fatty acids.Monounsaturated acids account for only about 10% of the total fatty acid and consist predominantly of 9,10-hexadecenoic acid (palmitoleic acid) and 11,12-octadecenoic acid (vaccenic acid).Three hydroxy acids that may function as intermdiates in the biosynthesis of unsaturated here fatty acids have also been isolated and characterized.
